Path of Islam: Sarajevo - Novi Pazar

Balkan dish with ottoman spices

As you probably heard, Balkan is a mishmash of many different cultures, traditions and nations and that is the true treasure of this place. It is common to have in one city: church, mosque and synagogue. Many conquerors roamed through Balkans but the ones that left biggest mark are definitely Ottomans. That is most visible in south - west of Serbia in a region called Raška or Sandžak and in its biggest town - Novi Pazar. We will see some of the famous buildings built in a Ottoman and Balkan style, one unusual bridge in Serbia, and city’s landmark - Arap mosque.

After, we will drive around mountains of Raška region towards Višegrad, town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Town, along with Drina river, was many times mentioned in novels and books written by poets. Old stone bridge standing proudly over Drina river and built by Ottomans became world famous when our writer Ivo Andrić got a Nobel Prize for its novel “The Bridge on the Drina’’. In it there are stories how bridge was built, how people that lived there managed to survive many mishaps and about our culture and way of life years ago. Right on the banks of mighty Drina River, there is a place called Andrićgrad dedicated to our writer and built by Emir Kusturica, one of the most prominent movies director from our region. There you can see authentic craftsman shops and many important institutions and with a mesmerizing view towards stone bridge and surroundings.

After Višegrad we will head towards Sarajevo, biggest and capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina where we will spend the night. Strolling the streets of Baščaršija, with its traditional bazar, will take you back in time. Here is the perfect place to drink traditional coffee from authentic Ottoman cups and good place to try Bosnian burek with meat and cheese pie. We will drink water from Sebilj Brunnen fountain and legend says that than you are guaranteed to return back here. We will walk through Ferhadija pedestrian street and along Miljacka river where Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque stands as a great example of Oriental architecture. We will end our tour on Yellow fortress that overlooks the city and from where you have amazing viewpoint on city roofs, minarets and church towers that show city multiculturalism.

Word of advice: You must have a passport with you as we cross the border between Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
